Summary: | This study aims to show that Rm 3,1-8 has a particular function, which is very important for the outline of the structure of Romans. Two questions are addressed here: a) 3,1-4 about the place of Israel in the history of salvation; and b) 3,5-8 about the possibility of sinning so that the merciful justice of God may display itself. They receive a full answer only in 9-11 and in 6-8 respectively. These two main questions arise out of the first section of the letter (= 1,16-5,21), where Paul states that Jews and Greeks all are equal before God both in sin (= 1,18-2,29 + 3,9-20) and in justification (= 3,21-5,21). |
