Summary: | This paper begins with an analysis of existing sociological theories of ecumenism, arguing that they do not deal adequately with all aspects of this phenomenon and that they are unable to account for the outcomes of church union negotiations in particular cases. It then puts forward an alternative model based on the analogy of marriage. It is argued that the marriage model, which has many aspects and ramifications, can both integrate and significantly add to the valid insights provided by those writers whose work is reviewed in the first part of the paper. The model gives particular attention to the process of union, including reasons why some negotiations for union fail. Possible limitations of the model are discussed, as well as its relationship to more general theories of negotiation and of the social construction of reality. |
