It is argued that a perceived decline in morals and a perception of legislative issues that symbolically support a more liberal element of American society motivated these evangelicals to political action. In the bid to place a candidate of like orientation in political office was seen the possibility to legitimate and thus protect the conservative lifestyle to which these evangelicals are committed.
