Instead of abandoning the classics, as has been advocated, this paper offers a revision. Drawing on theoretical resources of the theory of action, Weber's concepts of Wert and Zweckrationalität are reformulated into four-function rationalities for general as well as social action. The latter permit the prediction of cross-societal convergence, divergence, and historical invariance in specific types of social bonds as outcomes of modernizing change. | ||
