How and Why Did the Women in Ancient India Become Buddhist Nuns?

The concept of relative deprivation is tested on available materials about why women in India became nuns within the first few centuries of the Buddhist movement. The sources are the many verses of religious poetry which have been preserved in the Theravada tradition as the Therigatha.
