Description
Summary:This paper examines a cohort of altar boys and attempts to determine structural factors that distinguish between those likely to become priests and those not likely to do so. Rather than pursuing a traditional framework, which analyzes organizational commitment in terms of social experiences encountered within an organizational role, a developmental approach is utilized. This perspective focuses on processes by which individuals are selected and socialized to the priesthood prior to actually entering the organization. The data indicate that uniformity of family support is a key structural factor in distinguishing the committed group from the undecided and uncommitted.
