In cases where they have been applied to whole populations rather than selected institutions, they had been found inadequate to describe the complexity of the observed phenomena. The Canadian religious census, taken every ten years from 1871 to 1961, reveals the variety of types of religious behaviour which sociologists have yet to classify. An attempt is made to apply the concept “minority church”, recently developed in France, to a segment of the Canadian population whose religious behavior is under constant strain between church-like and sect-like tendencies. | ||
