AB Weber's thesis maintains its great historical significance, but has lost most of its conceptual and predictive value for an analysis of present problems; it is essentially misplaced when applied to the problems of Protestant-Catholic differences in present-day America. A number of hypotheses are suggested which could serve as an initial guide for a fresh study of the problem. Both American Protestantism and American Catholicism have been undergoing some important transitions in the relationship between religious and economic spheres of life.
