520 |a I examine the social dynamics and structural conditions that have contributed to the decline in the power and the internal efficacy of a social movement organization (SMO). The SMO in this case is the Oregon Citizens Alliance (OCA), a New Christian Right lobbying organization best known for its anti-gay rights initiatives. This is a qualitative field research study using primarily interviews, observation and analysis of movement literature. I show how changes in the political opportunity structure constrain and limit movement possibilities for political success, how the tension between the Christian Right and the Republican Party over ideology, strategy, and desired outcomes have lessened the OCA's influence among formerly sympathetic supporters, how organizational structure constrains efforts to move in new directions, and how member recruitment strategies limit organizational mobility.
