520 |a A link between personal autonomy in religion and family life is posited and demonstrated by Phillip Hammond ("Religion and Personal Autonomy"). Data from a nationally representative sample are used to partially replicate this study, using a measure of attitude toward marriage as a lifetime commitment and attitude toward individual freedom for spouses within the marriage. While a strong link between liberal denominational affiliation and greater personal autonomy in marriage is not found once a number of controls are imposed, members of stricter denominations, especially females, do report weaker support for autonomy. Frequency of church attendance is an independent predictor of level of autonomy desired in marriage, suggesting that church involvement can be a measure of a more general sense of institutional commitment and loyalty that is replicated in marriage.
