Recent research into religious television programming suggests an expansion of the conceptual distinction drawn between ritualized (e.g., habitual) and instrumental (e.g., information-seeking) secular TV usage. While supporting the universality of uses and gratifications assumptions concerning the active media audience, this investigation further emphasizes the selectivity of viewers of this fare. A canonical correlation analysis identified a third distinct pattern of viewing motives among 210 adult viewers of religious television--reactionary television use.
