This paper suggests an additional explanation rooted in religious values. The two dominant religious values, particularly evident in Christianity and Judaism, are love and justice. Love, it is argued, directs one's concern for the alleviation of his fellowman's problems and is thus concerned more with treatment than prevention. This concern thus makes the development of political conservatism possible. In contrast, the value of justice is concerned with the allocation and abuse of power, which directs one's attention more upon the system than the individual, and thus fosters the development of a politically liberal ideology. | ||
