Summary: | The relative permeability of the boundaries between white Protestants and white Catholics, Jews and (white) gentiles, and blacks and whites is assessed in five institutional areas: marriage, friendship, residence, occupations, and politics. Where possible, the data are examined in a time series perspective. The review of the literature generated by this outline indicates that the categories implied in Herberg's "Protestant, Catholic, Jew" must be modified. The new set of categories is white Christian, white non-Christian, and black. |
