The present essay argues against the latter view, maintaining that Ryan's contributions in ethical methodology aided the development of the then undeveloped field of social ethics, and that in particular, Ryan's distinctive use of Catholic natural law tradition anticipated at key points the work of a later generation of Catholic moral theologians.
