| Summary: | The terms "sect" and "sectarian" are frequently employed in Qumran scholarship. Without a social-scientific theory of sectarianism as a basis, scholars end up with various connotations and understandings of the phenomenon. In particular, classifications of different groups in ancient Judaism and early Christianity show that they are often based on different definitions of the term. This paper tries to illuminate the meanings of the term "sect" by studying its background in sociology. Secondly, the paper examines the use of the concept in Qumran studies with the help of one example, and points out some of the difficulties in applying a modern sect-typology into ancient texts. La recherche qumrânienne emploie souvent les termes « secte » et « sectaire ». Mais, par manque d'une théorie scientifique du phénomène du « sectarisme », les savants finissent souvent avec une compréhension très particulière du phénomène. Notamment, la classification des divers groupes à l'intérieur du Judaïsme ancien et du Christianisme primitif se base souvent sur diverses définitions du terme. Cet article essaie d'illuminer la signification du terme « secte » en étudiant son arrière-fond en sociologie. L'article étudie aussi l'emploi du terme dans les études qumrâniennes à l'aide d'un exemple concret et montre quelques-unes des difficultés que l'on trouve pour appliquer la typologie moderne des sectes aux textes anciens. |
