Une métaphore analogue se rencontre dans un midrash, cité par le Talmud de Babylone (Yeb 63a), pour commenter la bénédiction d'Abraham en Gn 12,3. Même s'il faut se garder de raisonner en termes d'emprunts, cela témoigne d'un arrière-plan intéressant pour comprendre l'image paulinienne, d'autant plus que Paul a longuement développé l'exemple d'Abraham en Rm 4 et que nous savons, grâce à Ga 4, sa connaissance de traditions de type haggadique sur l'histoire d'Abraham. This note intends to shed some light on the strange expression of the graft used in Rm 11:17 to evoke the engrafting of the nations into Israel. A similar image is used in a midrash from the Babylonian Talmud (Yebamoth 63a), attributed to R. Eleazar, to comment on the blessing of Abraham in Gen 12:3. A pun is made on the root 'to bless' to suggest that two beautiful pagan ladies have been 'engrafted' into Israël (Ruth from Moab and Naamah from Ammon). Even if we have to be careful not to speak in terms of borrowing, this testify nevertheless of an interesting Jewish background for this image, taking into account the importance of the figure of Abraham in Rm 4 and the fact that Paul knew about extrabiblical haggadic traditions about Abraham as we deduce from Ga 4. | ||
