ISAIAH 66:1-4: CONDEMNATION OF TEMPLE AND SACRIFICE OR CONTRAST BETWEEN THE ARROGANT AND THE HUMBLE?
Through a recognition of the allusions Isaiah makes to earlier Biblical texts, this paper demonstrates that Isa 66:1 does not condemn the Temple, rather hints that, if it is to be a place of rest for God, the worshippers must keep his covenant. Isa 66:2 indicates a person who places their whole trus...

520 | |a Through a recognition of the allusions Isaiah makes to earlier Biblical texts, this paper demonstrates that Isa 66:1 does not condemn the Temple, rather hints that, if it is to be a place of rest for God, the worshippers must keep his covenant. Isa 66:2 indicates a person who places their whole trust in God, who may be suffering because of it, but will be justified ultimately. The people in Isa 66:3 are the opposite. When the purpose of each sacrifice is considered, the four statements of the MT and 1QIsab, can be understood as a condemnation of hypocrisy, not sacrifice. The future for wrong doers is outlined in Isa 66:4. In sum, Isa 66:1-4 outlines the attitude and behaviour that God requires/ does not require from his worshipping community. | ||
