520 | |a Chapters 28-33 of Isaiah extend and intensify themes already introduced in earlier parts of the book, and none more so than the enigmatic commissioning of 6:9-10. The commission underlines the polarity between Yahweh and his created world – his infinite knowledge as opposed to the limited, finite and partial understanding of humankind. In communicating the plans of Yahweh to his creatures, Isaiah must use language that reveals divine knowledge and wisdom as perceivable instances while preserving Yahweh's inaccessibility. He must use language that conceals as well as reveals. Throughout chapters 28-33 the ambiguities and paradoxes of 6:9-10 are intensified by the presence of subtle metaphors and figures of speech that denote concealing, withholding and sheltering and their opposites. Ambiguous quotations and direct speech from the past are presented as if they contained 'unsaid' or 'withheld' meanings for the reader to unravel or invest with new significance for the present. In interacting with metaphorical language, the reader must assume an 'in-between' role that seeks to discern the ways of Yahweh in the human sphere. | ||
