The question to determine is not the nature of the leader's sin, but whether the new generation realised that Moses failed as leader at the waters of Meribah and was punished for it. The answer is negative. The reader realises that even Moses came to the full understanding of his failure only in Deut 32,51. On the basis of the Meribah episode, the narrator succeeds not only in stimulating the people, through the speeches of Moses, to prepare to enter the Good Land, but also in instructing the reader to focus his/her attention on the serious-ness of the leader's sin rather than on his death. Les sept textes se rapportant à la faute de Moïse (Nb 20, 12-13 ; 20, 24 ; 27, 14 ; Dt 1, 37 ; 3, 26 ; 4, 21 et 32, 51) sont examinés du point de vue des Hébreux, de Moïse et du lecteur. La question n'est pas la nature de la faute, mais plutôt de savoir si la nouvelle génération a réalisé que Moïse a échoué comme chef aux eaux de Mériba et en a été puni. La réponse est négative. Le lecteur comprend que même Moïse ne réalisa la portée de sa faute qu'en Dt 32, 51. Le narrateur a réussi, à partir de l'épisode de Mériba, non seulement à inciter, par le personnage de Moïse, le peuple à se préparer à l'entrée dans le bon pays, mais encore à informer le lecteur du sérieux de la faute du chef, plus que de sa mort.
