Description
Summary:A variety of Jewish exegetical trends from the Second Temple period, which concern themselves with Leviticus 19:18 are reviewed. Special attention is paid to attempts to widen the scope of Leviticus 19:18 to cover "hard core" enemies; characteristic features of the exegetical trends of this last kind are analyzed. The question of the relevance of these trends for investigation of the love-your-enemy precept from the Sermon on the Mount — the question to be dealt with in a second article — is raised.
