Approximately 15,000 skeletal remains were exhumed over a three year period from a burial complex under the Couvent St. Étienne/École Biblique et Archéologique Française. Archaeological and chemical data pinpoint this collection to the Byzantine period. Historical records describe a large complex, located along a thoroughfare of pilgrimage, with a pivotal role in the Byzantine church. The present study introduces aspects of a rich biological database, recorded in the bones of the Byzantine inhabitants. This investigation represents the first component of an overall biocultural model, detailing the age profile, sex ratio, general stature, and comparison to Judean desert monastic collections from the period. The symbiotic interplay of history, anthropology, theology, and biology has fostered an exciting research program; the information gathered to date provides an intriguing glimpse into the life of a large urban monastic community in Jerusalem during the Byzantine period. L'article propose des informations pour l'élaboration d'un modèle bioculturel sur la vie dans une communauté monastique byzantine à Saint-Étienne de Jérusalem. Sur une période de trois ans, environ 15 000 fragments de squelettes ont été extraits du complexe funéraire du couvent Saint-Étienne / École biblique et archéologique française. Les données archéologiques et chimiques renvoient le tout à la période byzantine. La documentation historique décrit, le long d'un axe de pèlerinage, un vaste complexe byzantin entourant la basilique eudocienne. L'étude ci-jointe présente des facettes d'une riche banque de données biologique, provenant des ossements des Byzantins. Cette recherche est la première composante d'un modèle bioculturel complet, détaillant les âges, la répartition par sexe, la stature, et faisant la comparaison avec les trouvailles monastiques du désert de Juda, pour la même période. La dynamique pluridisciplinaire entre histoire, anthropologie, théologie et biologie a nourri un passionnant programme de recherche ; les informations rassemblées à ce jour fournissent un curieux aperçu sur la vie d'une grande communauté monastique urbaine à Jérusalem. | ||
