It appears that the artists intended to depict the biblical story of Daniel in the lion's den (Daniel 6: 16-24), but as a combination of a cross (identified as Daniel) and the figure of a lioness. The cave and the engravings seem to be from the Byzantine period — the fifth century or the sixth century CE. In an adjacent cave, three small rock-cut chambers seem to have served as living quarters for monastic hermits. Crosses were carved on the walls. Quite likely, the priest Ioannes in our opinion did the inscriptions and the engravings. The biblical story of Daniel in the lion's den, was perceived as a symbol of faith and redemption in Christian tradition. Lors de l'exploration de la région du Tel Lavnin, deux grottes taillées dans le roc ont été découvertes. Sur les parois de l'une d'elles, on peut voir une inscription grecque : « Daniel, Jean le prêtre », des croix gravées, et un lion (ou une lionne). L'artiste aura voulu suggérer l'épisode biblique de Daniel dans la fosse aux lions (Dn. 6, 16-24), sous la forme d'une croix (identifiée à Daniel) et d'une lionne. La grotte et ses graffiti semblent de la période byzantine, Ve ou VIe s. Dans une grotte adjacente, trois chambrettes taillées dans le roc semblent avoir servi de logement à des ermites. Des croix sont gravées sur les parois. Selon nous, il est fort probable que le prêtre Jean soit l'auteur des graffiti et des gravures. L'histoire de Daniel dans la fosse aux lions était comprise, dans la tradition chrétienne, comme un symbole de foi et de rédemption. | ||
