Description
Summary:KTU₂ 1.40 is of considerable political, socio-economic, and religious importance. It represents an adaptation of the Old Babylonian mīšarum edict which was aimed primarily at alleviating economic stress. At Ugarit, religious rites of expiation and moral notions of civic responsibility combined to produce an event of a singular character, in which the citizens of Ugarit, registered in groups designated npy, promise to redress the grievances of residents from other locales, registered as ulp. The king and queen of Ugarit participate in the municipal celebration. The present study proposes a new interpretation of the enigmatic term npy, which holds the key to a proper understanding of KTU₂ 1.40.
