Until now, the variety of biblical definitions for three festivals a year has been explained in linear terms, each version a revision of a previous one. The comparison with Emar suggests that at least the calendar frameworks in Leviticus 23 and Numbers 28-29 are not best understood as a development from those of Exodus and Deuteronomy, though none of these reflects clear post-exilic innovation. Independent renditions of Israel's festival calendar should not come from the eventual dominance of a centralizing vision. Rather, they should derive ultimately from the earlier period when several major Yahweh sanctuaries thrived side by side.
