MATTHEW 5:17-18 IN THE ARGUMENTATION OF THE CONTEXT
Matt 5:17f is an integral part of 5:13-20. The two verses do not constitute a new argumentative beginning. The argumentation of 5:13-20 concerns the behaviour of the disciples, not of Jesus. It moves especially towards the conclusion in 5:19. Matt 5:17f, referring to Jesus' behaviour in word an...

520 | |a Matt 5:17f is an integral part of 5:13-20. The two verses do not constitute a new argumentative beginning. The argumentation of 5:13-20 concerns the behaviour of the disciples, not of Jesus. It moves especially towards the conclusion in 5:19. Matt 5:17f, referring to Jesus' behaviour in word and deed, carries within this context essentially the same, though more specific, argumentative function as the two general images used in 5:13-15. They all serve as proofs for the admonitions to the disciples in 5:16 and 5:19. The primary evidence of the theological importance of 5:17f is precisely its function as a decisive, axiomatic proof for a concluding application. | ||
