Les soferim se transmettaient en effet une tradition sur la mise en page des cantiques de la Torah fondée sur un Séfer Torah dont les colonnes avaient 42 lignes. Les premiers scribes de codices de la Torah avaient préservé l'essentiel de cette tradition avec des pages de 21 lignes. Mais, pour réaliser le projet de Ben Asher, Ben Buyâ c â dut faire passer de 21 à 28 lignes la hauteur et de 32 à 53 signes la largeur de ses pages, tout en préservant ce qu'il pouvait des traditions de mise en page transmises par les soferim. Cela a abouti à un codex où la mise en page du cantique de Moïse n'est plus qu'une ruine. Cette constatation n'ôte rien à la haute qualité du travail d'Aaron ben Asher en tant que ponctuateur et massorète. Mais il est paradoxal que ce soit justement pour la mise en pages des Cantiques que Maïmonide ait pris pour modèle ce codex. Maimonides took the manuscript of Aleppo as a model, which made it become the prototype of the classical Tiberian text. But Aaron ben Asher, in making for the first tune a codex containing the whole Bible, set a huge challenge for his scribe, Shelomoh ben Buyâ'â. The soferim, in fact, maintained a tradition on the page layout of the canticles of the Torah that was based on a Sefer Torah of which the columns had 42 lines. The first scribes of the codices of the Torah had preserved the essentials of that tradition by using pages of 21 lines. But to carry out the project of Ben Asher, Ben Buyâ'â had to increase the length of his pages from 21 to 28 lines and their width from 32 to 53 signs, while at the same time trying to preserve all that he could of the traditions about the layout of the pages transmitted by the soferim. That led to a codex in which the page layout of the canticle of Moses is a shambles. Saying that does not diminish in any way the high quality of the work of Aaron ben Asher as a punctuator and massorete. But it is paradoxical that it is precisely for the page layout of the Canticles that Maimonides took this codex as a model. | ||
