In 219 BC, Antiochus III the Great, launched his troops on the conquest of Coele-Syria. Learning that his enemies were concentrated at Rabbatamana (Amman-Philadelphia), he besieged that city. The garrison surrendered when a prisoner revealed to the besiegers the underground passage leading to the water supply (Polybius, Hist., V, 71, 9). The water system was reported 100 years ago and was entirely excavated in 1988. This article analyses the political consequence of the campaign of Antiochus III. |
