Ils rappellent les prodiges qui ont annoncé la chute du Temple et l'oracle selon lequel le maître de l'univers viendrait d'Orient. Cette accumulation de signes surnaturels trouve sa cohérence si l'on considère qu'il s'agit d'une tradition provenant de la propagande flavienne : la guerre contre les Juifs, culminant lors de la chute du Temple, représentait pour Vespasien et Titus un important élément de légitimation ; la protection active du(des) Dieu(x) de Jérusalem, appelé aux côtés des Romains par le rite de l'euocatio, authentifiait le charisme personnel du nouveau princeps et justifiait sa proclamation. Flavius Josèphe se fait l'écho de cette tradition en l'adaptant à ses conceptions de la Providence. Parallelism between Tacitus, Hist. V, 13, 2-7 and Josephus, BJ. VI, 288-315 has long been noticed and scholars agree about a common origin. These accounts tell about prodigies foretelling the Temple fall and the oracle by the terms of which a World ruler would come from the East. All together these supernatural manifestations make sense, thinking of a tradition proceeding from Flavian propaganda: the Jewish war, whose climax occurs with the Tempel's fall, was an important recognition point for Vespasian and Titus. The efficient protection from the God(s) living in Jerusalem, summoned to the Roman side by the ritual Eucatio, authenticated Vespasian's own charism. Josephus give us an account of this tradition, according to his own idea of Providence. | ||
