520 | |a The Essene parallels, which have dominated the discussion of 2 Cor 6:14-7:1 since 1954, are inferior to a more complete series from Philo. The passage, therefore, is firmly rooted in Hellenistic Judaism. Philo, moreover, furnishes a meaning for apistoi that harmonizes with Paul's concern in 2 Cor 4:18; 5:12, and enables the text to be read as an appeal to the pneumatikoi of 1 Cor, who had continued to oppose Paul at Corinth. Thus, it is an integral element of 2 Cor 1-9. | ||
