520 |a In view of evidence of diminished ethnicity in rural community life, this study employs case materials from rural German-Catholic communities in Stearns County, Minnesota, to examine certain relations among types of social change, whether parochial or universal in scope and origin, in light of Warner's hypothesis that the religious system acts as a potent bulwark of ethnicity; an institution resisting certain forms of change. Data support Warner's hypothesis to the extent that ethnicity, even when attenuated, may become a more salient factor blocking change when a local religious system acts contrary to parochial ethnic traditions in an effort to promote and induce universal change.
