Summary: | The spectacular monastic complex on the rocky island of Skellig off the south-west coast of Ireland is a UNESCO World Heritage site that has been subject to archaeological excavations and surveys since the 1980s. In recent years, it has been the location of episodes in the Star Wars films The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi which has led to some diminution of its cultural heritage and, in particular, its place in the history of universal monasticism. This article attempts to restore its significance to world monasticism by reading its location and landscape through the lens of monastic literature and monastic ideology. |
