Going beyond the undisputed letters by Paul ἐκκλησία would thus no longer designate the local congregation but the universal Church instead. Yet it is still open to question whether ecclesiology becomes the theological centre, out of which Christology, too, enfolds, and the Church acquires a soteriological function. The paper argues for a re-examination of the term ἐκκλησία and the metaphors used in the epistle. It then emerges that Ephesians does indeed have an ecclesiological theme, but not yet the concept of one ‘Church’ as a transcendent entity. Of major importance are the various body metaphors, as they imply the unity of the assembled. Nevertheless, even the body metaphors do not presuppose an already developed concept of the ‘Church’ as the ‘realm of salvation’ or any other spatial metaphor. Instead, they demonstrate that soteriology and ecclesiology remain strictly related to Christology. With a view to the epistle's intention this means that Ephesians develops a vision of the unity and community of believers, not, however, as the theological construct of the Church, but rather as a paraenetic goal to integrate Christians of differing persuasions., German abstract: Dass die “Kirche” das zentrale Thema des Epheserbriefs sei, ist opinio communis der Exegese. Anders als in den gemeinhin als authentisch geltenden Paulusbriefen bezeichne ἐκκλησία hier nicht mehr die Ortsgemeinde, sondern die universale Kirche. Umstritten ist nur, ob die Ekklesiologie theologisch so fundamental ist, dass von ihr aus die Christologie entfaltet wird, und die Kirche eine soteriologische Funktion erhält. Der Aufsatz greift diese Diskussion ausgehend von der Verwendung von ἐκκλησία im Epheserbrief auf und gelangt zu der These, dass ἐκκλησία noch kein Konzept einer Gesamtkirche bezeichnet, sondern auf die Versammlung der Glaubenden referiert, womit die einzelnen Glaubenden im Blick bleiben. Entfaltet wird die im Brief gleichwohl zentrale Ekklesiologie—die theologische Bedeutung der Gemeinschaft der Glaubenden—vor allem durch die verschiedenen Leibmetaphern. Auch diese setzen aber noch kein Konzept von “Kirche” als Heilsbereich voraus; die Ekklesiologie bleibt wie die Soteriologie der Christologie untergeordnet. Im Blick auf die Intention des Briefes bedeutet dies, dass dieser nicht ein theologisches Konzept der Universalkirche abruft, sondern erst eine Vision von der Zusammengehörigkeit der Glaubenden verschiedener Gemeinden und Traditionen entwirft. | ||
