So could the text be an indicator in the discussion about the right ‘Perspective on Paul’? This paper argues instead that we should read Eph 2.8-9 in its own context and that means first of all that we should follow the flow of the dominant metaphor of ‘dead and alive’. While some phrases might be a Pauline reminiscence, the text as a whole deals with the grace of God in order to substantiate the demand for a life lived according to God's will, as described in greater detail in Ephesians 4–6. Nevertheless Eph 2.1-10 is broadly coherent with Paul's theology., German abstract: Eph 2.1-10 wird in der Auslegung vor allem an der paulinischen Tradition gemessen. Irritiert die scheinbar ‘realisierte Eschatologie’ in V.6, so gilt andererseits V.8f als einer der wenigen nachpaulinischen Reflexe der Rechtfertigungslehre im Neuen Testament. Allerdings fehlt die spezifische Terminologie, und was überhaupt die Rechtfertigungsbotschaft des Paulus ausmacht, ist heute umstritten. Die vorliegende Auslegung fordert daher, den Text in seinem eigenen Duktus und in Wahrnehmung seiner besonderen Tot-lebendig-Metaphorik zu lesen: Jüdische wie nichtjüdische Menschen waren ‘tot in Sünden’ (V.1-3, 5). Ihre Rettung verdankt sich allein der Gnade Gottes, der die Menschen mit Christus ‘lebendig macht’. So begründet der Text, ohne die Endzeiterwartung zu dispensieren, die Aufgabe zu einem Leben gemäß dem Willen Gottes (V.10). | ||
