520 |a With the spread of the Reformation in Hungary it became necessary for the introduction of the vernacular liturgy in the protestant (Lutheran, Calvinist and Unitarian) churches to translate a part of the medieval plainsong repertory. Hungarian Gregorian chant of the 16th–17th centuries is preserved in the so-called graduals and songbooks of gradual character. These mainly contain the liturgy of the subsidiary services rather than that of the principal one, the Mass. (From this it is clear that the Hungarian word gradual is not the same as the graduale referring to the medieval book.) The most important liturgical forms in the thirty surviving manuscripts and printed graduals are the antiphon, the hymn and the psalm. As a result of the numerous translations, the texts of the pieces vary and likewise the music also exists in variants, due to the diversity of sources employed. In addition to variants the antiphon repertory was enlarged with some „new compositions“, too. By the end of the 17th century the copying and usage of the graduals came finally to an end. Vernacular plainsong might have been a suitable means for ecumenicity some centuries ago. Perhaps under today's more favourable circumstances it could fulfil this mission.
