Summary: | The Old Prussian Book of Worship, which was decisively promoted by King Frederick William III at the beginning of the 19th century, has proved to be of far-reaching significance for the further development of forms of public worship used by Lutheran, Reformed and United Protestant Churches in German-speaking countries. The author elaborates essential aspects of the theological conception behind the Book and closes his survey with this conclusion: that the Old Prussian Book of Worship represents an endeavour to take over from the past central elements of the shaping process in the Christian faith, and, at the same time, to bring these to mind for a world becoming ever more broadly secularized (cf. final section).
