Description
Summary:In the Berlin Edition of Praxis Pietatis Melica by Johann Crüger (1653–1702) and in the Frankfurt Edition (1656–1676) hymns by Paul Gerhardt are set out in the tables of hymns for the Sundays of the year and for certain festivals in the Church Calendar. The author provides a chart of which hymns are found in the various editions and then compares this with the Table for Sundays given in the Geistliche Seelen-Musik by Heinrich Müller, Frankfurt 1659 and 1668. While this study refers, of course, to Crüger's book, the Sunday Table is independently structured. The author concludes that J. Crüger's Praxis Pietatis is intended to serve and inspire not only private devotion but also, and even more, the worship of the church through the singing of the then 'new songs' of Paul Gerhardt.
