Summary: | The poetic work of prose, Risi, ploro, fui, non sum ..., probably written by Leonard Lechner himself, on which he composed his motet for six voices in 1581, hitherto has been misinterpreted in musicological literature to be a "musical pleasantry". On the contrary, this is indeed profound poetry "in the shadow of death", a melancholic contemplation of vanitas vanitatum. The comparison with other works by Lechner proves him to have led a life sub specie aeternitatis already when he was in his thirties, a fact, which becomes even more evident in his late works. |
