520 |a Le De paenitentia du Pseudo-Éphrem (CPL 1143a) est une refonte du De reparatione lapsi de Bachiarius. Il est cité par Beatus de Liebana, par Florus et dans un manuscrit de Moissac à l’intérieur d’un commentaire de Raban Maur sur I-IV Regum. Bachiarius intervenait dans un cas personnel pour conseiller la clémence ; le De paenitentia argumente dans le même sens mais d’une façon plus générale. L’auteur, à situer en Espagne ou en Septimanie, après Bachiarius et avant Beatus, s’oppose à un courant rigoriste influent en même temps qu’il atteste la persistance d’un ascétisme de type particulier, dont témoignait déjà Bachiarius. On peut améliorer substantiellement l’édition d’Assemani (1746) basée sur un manuscrit tardif et reprise dans PLS 4, 617-640, grâce à Bachiarius, Beatus, Florus et le manuscrit de Moissac.
