Pour Bède, une interprétation littérale des six jours était importante. C’est pourquoi il estimait nécessaire - telle est ma thèse - de s’écarter de l’interprète chrétien le plus connu, Augustin. Bède réfute sa compréhension de la création simultanée et des rationes seminales, sans identifier Augustin comme objet de ses critiques. Je vois dans la différence des publics des deux commentateurs l’explication de la différence de leurs approches. Augustin écrivait en un temps où vivaient encore un nombre substantiel de non-chrétiens instruits, et il devait s’asssurer que la Genèse fût recevable par des gens cultivés de l’antiquité tardive. Bède, en revanche, s’adressait à un public religieux dans un contexte profondèment chrétien, en vue de l’instruire. Il aurait été critiqué s’il n’avait pas donné une interprétation dogmatiquement sans détours. Ainsi son interprétation de Genèse 1-2 montre Bède affronté à la tradition patristique et la mettant en conformité avec ses propres intérêts et les besoins de son temps. | ||
| 520 | |a This paper discusses Bede’s (ca. 672-735) interpretation of the creation account in Genesis 1-2. It shows how Bede established the material earth as a dependent part of God’s creation, but one provided with the saving rhythms of time from the beginning. For Bede a literal interpretation of the six days of creation was important. He therefore felt it necessary, I argue, to disagree with the best-known Christian interpreter of Genesis - Augustine. Bede refuted Augustine’s understanding of simultaneous creation and of the rationes seminales, without explicitly identifying Augustine as the object of his criticisms. I identify the difference in the two exegetes’ audiences as being a key factor in explaining their difference of approach. Augustine wrote when there were still substantial numbers of educated non-Christians and he thus had to ensure that Genesis would be acceptable to those educated in Late Antique science. Bede, on the other hand, was addressing a religious audience in a solidly Christian context for purposes of education. He was open to criticism if he did not provide a dogmatically straightforward interpretation of the creation. Thus his interpretation of Genesis 1-2 sees Bede both engaging creatively with patristic tradition and shaping it to conform to his own interests and the needs of his time. | ||
