Supported by archbishop Celso Costantini, the apostolic delegate to China, Gresnigt designed and built no less than five important educational buildings: the regional seminars of Hong Kong and Kaifeng, the seminar of Xuanhua, and the Catholic University of Peking. Based both on unexplored archives and fieldwork, this article reconstructs the biography and the chronology of Gresnigt’s works and put it in perspective of the religious and artistic context of indigenization. The article also examines the meaning, the architectural specificity and the posterity of Gresnigt’s works in the context of the architectural evolution of China in the 1920s, a country in transition to modernity and search for a new national identity. | ||

En moins de cinq ans, soutenu par Mgr Celso Costantini, délégué apostolique en Chine, Gresnigt conçut et bâtit quatre grands établissements d’éducation : les séminaires régionaux de Hong Kong et de Kaifeng, le séminaire de Xuanhua, et l’Université catholique de Pékin. À partir d’archives inédites et de visites sur place, l’article retrace la biographie et la chronologie des travaux de Gresnigt en Chine, et met son œuvre en perspective dans le contexte religieux et artistique de l’inculturation. L’article s’interroge également sur la signification, la spécificité architecturale et la postérité de l’œuvre de Gresnigt dans le contexte de l’évolution architecturale de la Chine des années 1920, en transition vers la modernité et en quête d’une nouvelle identité nationale. | ||
