Cependant la comparaison des diverses vitae en latin et de celle en moyen anglais montre que la passio et la translatio remontent presque certainement à une tradition anglo-saxonne et qu’un culte ayant probablement son origine à l’époque anglo-saxonne a persisté jusqu’au xvie siècle. Que cette tradition soit essentiellement locale est confirmé par des références géographiques détaillées, surtout dans la version en moyen-anglais. La Vie de saint Fremund, telle qu’elle nous est parvenue, peut être considérée comme un mélange de l’usage anglo-saxon et des adaptations requises après la conquête normande (1066). La vita en moyen anglais n’est conservée que dans un manuscrit, British Library, Stowe 949, produit près du centre du culte de saint Fremund. Comme elle n’a jamais été éditée, un appendice en fournit le texte. | ||

However, a comparison of the various Latin and the one Middle English vitae discloses that the passio and translatio almost certainly go back to an Anglo-Saxon tradition, and that a cult which probably originated in Anglo-Saxon times persisted well into the 16th century. That the tradition was essentially local is borne out by detailed geographical references, especially in the Middle English version. The Life of St Fremund that has come down to us is presumably a mixture of Anglo-Saxon usage and post-1066 Norman requirements. | ||
