Cet article examine la signification de cette massive compilation de récits hagiographiques, modelée à partir d’un texte bénédictin traditionnel, le Martyrologe d’Usuard, mais transformée par de longs emprunts à la Legenda aurea de Jacques de Voragine et au Speculum historiale de Vincent de Beauvais. En distinguant les cycles du temporal et du sanctoral et en incorporant de longs récits de Vincent de Beauvais et d’ailleurs, Guy créait une large introduction aux vies de saints, d’une utilisation beaucoup plus aisée, dans une perspective liturgique, que les compilations des deux grands érudits dominicains du XIIIe siècle. L’article suggère aussi que Guy de Châtres pourrait aussi avoir composé le Tractatus de tonis, écrit peu après 1300 par un Guy, moine de Saint-Denis qui s’intéressait particulièrement à mettre en relation les traditions de Gui d’Arezzo sur le plain-chant des discussions aristotéliciennes sur la nature de la musique. Dans les deux cas, un classique de la littérature monastique reçoit une nouvelle vie par la transfusion de textes et d’idées développés au XIIIe siècle. | ||
| 520 | |a The Sanctilogium of Guy of Châtres, abbot of Saint-Denis 1326-1342/43, has received little critical attention. This article considers the significance of this massive compilation of hagiographic narratives as modelled on a traditional Benedictine text, namely the Martyrology of Usuard, but transformed by drawing extensively on the Legenda aurea of Jacobus de Voragine and the Speculum historiale of Vincent of Beauvais. By separating out the temporal and sanctoral cycles in the Legenda aurea, and incorporating extensive narrative texts from Vincent of Beauvais and elsewhere, Guy created a vast introduction to the lives of the saints that was considerably easier to use from a liturgical perspective than the compilations of the two great Dominican scholars of the thirteenth century. This paper also suggests that Guy of Châtres might also have composed the Tractatus de tonis, written soon after 1300 by Guy, a monk of Saint-Denis who was particular interested in relating Guidonian traditions of plainchant to Aristotelian discussions of the nature of music. In both cases, a classic monastic author is given new life through the infusion of texts and ideas developed in the thirteenth century. | ||
