Sainte Wulfthryth était la mère d’une sainte bien plus largement connue, Édith de Wilton, et dans les deux versions, sa vita est une partie de celle de sa fille. Les différences entre la version en moyen anglais et la version en latin révèlent que l’auteur moyen anglais avait accès à des sources que Goscelin ignorait ou qu’il n’a pas utilisées à cause de la réputation affaiblie de Ste Wulfthryth au XIe siècle. | ||
| 520 | |a The Embedded Saint comprises a new edition of the only Middle English vita of the Anglo-Saxon St Wulfthryth, found in The Wilton Chronicle, and a comparison of this account to Goscelin’s Latin version, composed ca. 1080. St Wulfthryth was the mother of the far better-known St Edith of Wilton and in both versions her vita is part of her daughter’s. The differences between the Middle English and the Latin version indicate that the Middle English author had access to sources which were either unknown to Goscelin or not used by him because of St Wulfthryth’s tarnished reputation in the 11th century. | ||
