Summary:The Young Men´s Christian Association (YMCA) is one of the most widespread nonprofit voluntary associations. Its main aim is to promote essential human values such as solidarity, freedom, justice and social harmony. Born inEngland in 1844, it is currently present in 119 countries in all continents, and boasts 54 million members. «The Y» was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 on account of its work with war refugees and displaced persons. It has also contributed to creating such well-known sports as basketball (1891) and volleyball (1895). In 1980, it was established in Spain where, despite its importance,it remains little known.
Young Men´s Christian Association (YMCA) es una de las organizaciones internacionales de carácter voluntario y no lucrativo más extendidas del mundo. Su objetivo principal es la promoción de valores humanos esenciales: solidaridad, libertad, justicia y convivencia, principalmente con niños y jóvenes. Fundada en Inglaterra en 1844 hoy está presente en 119 países en los cinco continentes, y cuenta con 54 millones de miembros. Le fue concedido el Premio Nobel de la Paz en 1946 por su trabajo con refugiados y desplazados de guerra. Creadora de deportes algunos tan conocidos como el baloncesto (1891) y el voleibol (1895). Se implanta en España en 1980 y, pese a su importancia, es todavía muy poco conocida.
