The internees in whose wellbeing Bell took a particular interest included the group of 'non-Aryan' pastors whom Bell had brought to England shortly before the war. The paper also considers Bell's attempts to improve the lot of the thousands of men who, at the height of the internment crisis, were deported to Canada and Australia, his support for the refugee organisations in their efforts on behalf of their interned and deported members and, finally, his preparedness to align himself with unpopular causes even at some considerable cost to himself.
