His travels aroused quite a bit of interest, and were interpreted as a sign that Moscow wanted to establish contacts with the Vatican. This article describes both Reding's surviving records of this journey, and the reactions to the visit. Reding was well aware of the risks that such a visit would be misinterpreted, or alternatively that too much significance would be made of his presence in the Soviet Union. He knew very well that some theologians had damaged their careers by becoming propagandists for the Soviet ideology, which had led to their being regarded by their Soviet hosts as "useful idiots". But one such colleague, Ludger Honnefelder, who succeeded Reding in Berlin, felt there was some value in trying to initiate a spirited scientific debate, which should avoid any direct political references critical of Marxist theory. It may be surprising that Pope Pius XII was not directly involved in the offer to hold talks, but appears to have approved the trip in a roundabout way. | ||
