After the Shoa, approaches to Christian-Jewish talks only developed gradually. With the Second Vatican Council of October 28, 1965 and its declaration of 'Nostra Aetate', outlining the attitude of the church towards non-Christian religions, the Catholic Church took a turn for the better. 'Nostra Aetate' also had an effect on the churches of the Reformation. Its reception was significantly promoted by Pope John Paul II. (1978-2005), thus leaving a substantial legacy to his successor, Benedict XVI. A long-standing Jewish demand was met when on December 31, 1993 the Diplomatic Agreement was signed by Israel and the Vatican in Jerusalem. In its wake an exchange of ambassador and nuncio occurred. Despite current disturbances in the relationship between Israel and the Vatican, the Jewish-Catholic relationship is generally making major progress. The centuries-old animosity has been replaced by an attitude of respect towards the Jewish people and Judaism, an attitude which certainly will have to stand the test over and over again. | ||
