Claude Vigée: Das Judenstatut von 1940 als Auslöser eines Namenswechsels, des Eintritts in eine Widerstandsorganisation und der Vergewisserung der Berufung als jüdischer Dichter

520 |a The 'Judenstatut' of the Vichy regime, which Claude Strauss (born 1921) discovered in Toulouse on 19 October 1940, provoked a radical personal reconsideration of the Judaism which had once existed, but had been completely assimilated, in Alsace. Because of this he himself became aware of how weak the foundations, and how brittle the guarantees, of human rights proved to be in the face of the discriminatory, and potentially life-threatening, measures of a totalitarian regime. His own growing sense of the bond between God and Abraham led the budding author to change his first name to Jacob, who had been called Israel after his struggle with the angel, and his surname in Vigée to the hebraic 'Haÿ-Ani ('I have life'; Isaiah 49:18). It was under these names, and in the certain prospect of the fate which all Jewish authors now confronted, that he published fragments of a poetry cycle in an underground journal and joined a Jewish resistance organization. This article seeks to retrieve the story of a single, otherwise anonymous life, caught up in the midst of those victims of the Shoah whose names and way of life might otherwise disappear.
