| Summary: | Church historiography inevitably encounters in many ways themes of culture, cultural studies and cultural criticism. The purpose of this article is to examine various genealogies of this convergence and at the same time to discuss the requirements that these contexts make of the scholar of church history who seeks to discuss not only the critical functions but also the cultural presence of the Church in history. This inevitably provokes tensions, not least between an approach which emphasizes the cultural form of church and one which pursues an historical-theological version of church history. It also implies a variety of theological clarifications. |
