This article will begin by observing historical and linguistic patterns across the region. It will then discuss a variety of distinctive images and myths drawn from history and from the common politics of remembrance there. In light of this it will consider how historians of Middle Eastern Europe should respond. In conclusion, the article argues for the importance of cooperation between Western European specialists and European-Middle Eastern experts. DO 10.13109/kize.2009.22.1.156
